Dictation Systems, Digital, Speech Recognition/Transcription

Definition : Dictation systems designed for automated digital recording of speech input (e.g., dictation) and translation of the information into text output. These systems typically consist of a personal computer (PC), a microphone that is compatible with the speech recognition system and the PC sound board, a speaker and/or headphone, a printer, and the appropriate software (e.g., general and medical terminology dictionaries and a word processing program). Typical applications for speech recognition systems include dictation and editing of clinical findings and related reports, frequently without the assistance of a transcriptionist or need for hard copy. Speech recognition systems equipped with the appropriate software can also be used as a component of speech therapy/diagnosis interventions.
